THE FADING MEMORY

Cold breezy winds were blowing and snow was falling from the sky in the streets of the beautiful city of Montreal, it was a cold and silent night as I laid in the bed wrapped under the thick quill covering my entire body trying to evade the coldness. I was imagining myself as a warrior fighting the war against the cold with the protection of my thick blanket, which I can even call as a ‘cold war’. As I continue lounging in the bed of my flat in Canada, I suddenly hear faint knocks on my door and I shook them off thinking I was dreaming again which I always used to do, no surprise there. A few seconds later I heard sounds coming from my door again but this time it was loud banging sounds on my door and I was sure someone was at my door and I was also sure that if the banging continues my door would start cracking.

As I hurriedly jump off my bed, I could feel the chillness of the floor as I sprinted bare footedly to open the door right away. I opened the door wondering who it might be in this odd hours and I saw an unfamiliar fellow in his mid thirties pales as the snow and with green eyes. He was dressed in nothing but a wrinkled tshirt and a brown pant in this cold snowy winter night. As I stood there confused he said in his rough voice, “your friend is dying and he needs your help”. I was more puzzled now and replied in a confused tone “ I think you have some to the wrong flat” and added “ do check the flat number before you try to break someone’s door again”. I was about to close the door when he put his dirty boot in the door so I couldn’t close it and continued saying, “Your friend is in a serious condition and he needs your help right away”. I was both irritated and angry now, I ran outside the corridor to check if it was me who was in the wrong flat and the big silver board read ‘26K’ and I was sure now that this guy was some lunatic from a mental hospital who is trying to mess with me. I roared angrily to him, “I was new to this place and I don’t have any friends here”. And he replied straightaway “ I know, but your friend is dying”. I jokingly replied “Then why don’t you try knocking my neighbour’s door, he is the one has five to six buddies and he might even take ‘my mystery friend’ if you toss him over” and chuckled. He turned red in anger and stretched out his arm which was thick as an elephant’s trunk and grabbed my feeble, weak and thin hand and hauled me down the hallway. I tried protesting but it was of no avail.

As i reached the outside of my building with the stranger I could it was snowing heavily and i could feel the cold winds blowing in me which made me shiver in coldness and I started to rub my palms to keep myself warm. As i glanced back at the strange fellow he looked serious and now pointed his finger towards wide open road which was covered in snow. I wondered where he was pointing his finger, I wasn’t able to look properly because of the strong winds and as i tried looking closely i saw a tiny golden dog covered entirely with snow all over his body lying near the pavement without any movements and lifelessly. I rushed to rescue the dog from the snow as i lifted it from the heavy snow covering the poor little fellow and turned around to call the strange fellow for help but the mysterious guy has now disappeared, faded into thin air. I realised i had no time so i brushed off the thought about the mysterious guy and started to sprinting back to my room with the little poor thing in my arms. I turned on the heater with my thick blanket hoping he was alive and the dog confirmed it with a soft “woof” which made me jump in joy like the great king Solomon. I remember it was the same dog which i feeded and played with it three nights back. I felt happy and confused at the same time remembering all these events which happened an year ago as my dog was nibbling my toes while i brushed its head gently. But i still wonder at nights while laying in the bed who was that mysterious guy and where did go, Was he a ‘Dog God’ protecting this beautiful little guy from snow and harm and why did he disappear was it because the deed which he came for was done, or was everything of this was a big coincidence, or was it the work of some higher power, or was it my destiny. I smiled and rubbed my eyes gently thinking the mysterious guy faded into the snowy wind just like a fading memory. All this thinking made me sleepy so i was getting ready doze off in my bed under the blanket but this time with my beautiful golden retriever wrapped in my arms just like that night.

While i was dozing off i again heard knocks in my door this time i was too lazy to get up so i ignored it, my dog woofed looking at me. The knocking continued, i got off from my bed in half heart and my dog followed me and as i opened the door i saw a elderly man who might be in his late sixties, well dressed but looked very sad which was clearly seen in his eyes. He started saying ‘ That he lost his dog’ and was interrupted by my dog running towards him and licking all over his face. I realised the situation and said my final goodbye to the dog with an heavy heart and eyes filled with tears. Looks like only saving the Dog was my destiny.
